MURAL PREP DAYS JULY 12 & 13 (Sunday and Monday)
We are painting the side of our building! First we have to get the building ready to paint, so this first event is for cleaning and prepping! During this event, we will pressure wash, sand and prime the surface of the building. Any sidewalk/parking lot/edge of building areas needing cleaned, weeded, etc will also happen at this time. Once this is done, at a later date (soon, though!) we will then paint the large-scale mural on the side of the building and a smaller mural on the (garage door) on the front.

What we need:
VOLUNTEERS! We will organize this event in shifts so that we can have smaller “groups” to limit crowds due to Covid. Please bring your mask! Work gloves may be useful too.
Our building is close to two major roads, so any children coming with you need to be kept safe from the roadway and able to help, not distract from the project!
If you have any of the following, we need these supplies: sandpaper, sanding blocks, electric sanders, ladders, scaffolding, painter’s “scraping” tools/putty knives, bottled water, rakes, gardening trowels, paint (see below), paint rollers, paint brushes, paper towels,
We will also be purchasing primer for the surface, so if you have any primer (Problock Prep-rite by Sherwin Williams has been recommended) or paint supply connections that will be helpful too!

As an explanation of the components of the mural, here are some highlights: we are a “magical” place (Curiosities) that embodies the mystical and spiritual, embraces community and empowers people to grow as humans and spiritual beings.
The mermaid represents the strength, beauty and power of black women and the healing energies of the Voodoo Orisha Yemeya, the goddess of the ocean, and the protectress of her people.
The Moon phases honor the changes and cycles we witness: Newness, Growth, Illumination, Release and Rebirth.
The Compass, encircled with the phrase “We are CommuNity TogethEr” uses the directional points of West, North, and East highlighted as navigational points in the phrase. The south, at the bottom of the compass, though not integrated into the phrase, identifies where the shop is- South. (Could even include a “you are here” at the south point)
Ocean corals/flowers and crystals morph into roses (love and healing), succulents (resilience) and more crystals. These images represent not only beauty and love, but the bounty of the planet, and positive energy and healing.
A caterpillar with the word “change” - in the colors of the Rastafarian movement, moves to a chrysalis with the word “is” and then blossoms into a butterfly with the word “beautiful.”
*CHANGE is necessary, the BLM is change,
*IS — is the transformation, from one way of being to another, and what’s on the other side?
*expansion, soaring, full expression— it’s BEAUTIFUL. The butterfly can be scaled to be “human-size” to encourage people to be the body of the butterfly. Texture, for the sensory folks, and Braille can also be integrated into the butterfly wings.
